How to Raise a Healthy Puppy – My Rottweiler Puppy

How to Raise a Healthy Puppy – My Rottweiler Puppy

Raising a rottweiler puppy can be a lot more different than raising any other breed of dog. Just like having a baby, you must be attentive to your rotty puppy. Make sure that you do not leave them alone for extended periods of time because they will panic and start to whine for you.

I was not prepared for my puppy to be honest. I got her from a guy I had met on Craigslist for a decent price. She is a German Rottweiler, she was only 6 weeks old, and I named her, Xena B. Johnson. The “B” stood for “Bear” because she looked like a little bear cub with her short tail.

I don’t really know why snipping the rottweiler’s tail became so popular, but I always thought it looked pretty cool. The short tail makes my dog look different and more unique than the other breeds to me and that alone makes her special. Her black and mahogany coat is so beauty. I love the velvet feel and gloss that he coat had naturally.

The first thing I did after leaving the breeder was pick my girlfriend up from work. Of course she had no idea that I had got a puppy, but we had been talking about getting one and she wanted me to check out the rottweiler puppies that this particular breeder had. So, You can probably imagine the surprising look that she had on her face when she opened the door and saw Xena sitting in her seat. It was so funny because she was talking to a co-worker while she was getting in the car, so she never really looked in the car until right before she was about to sit.

Anyways, after the hugs and kisses, and I love you’s, we took Xena to PetSmart to get some pet supplies. Like I said earlier, I was not prepared for a puppy. I got her a bed to lay on, some training pads, some dog food and treats (like chicken, beef, and cheese bites). I will admit that PetSmart’s items are a bit more costly than the pet supplies that you will find at your local Dollar Store, Walmart, HEB, Krogers… etc.

The dog breeder initially told me that he had been feeding his dogs a cheap brand of dog food since he had so many dogs to feed. I ended up choosing IAMS Dog Food as the food of choice for my Rottweiler. They have different kinds of food for different age groups, so all I had to do is grab the one for puppies around 6 weeks old, and I got the Smart Puppy IAMS brand because I wanted her to be smart.

I usually go to Walmart, simply because it is the closest store near me with a decent variety of pet supplies. I spent around $50 per month on food and snacks for my rottweiler puppy. I’m just glad Walmart didn’t decide to add a Pet Hospital inside. I can definitely see a dog getting loose and making it to the McDonald’s or the food aisle. All the customers going in panic because some crazy, deranged chihuahua is snapping at everyone’s ankles.

Anyways, while I am at PetSmart, I notice the Banfield Pet Hospital in the back. So, we go to check it out and see what all they do and if they have any plans suitable for our puppy. We ended up registering Xena to the wellness plan because we felt like we needed to make sure she was as healthy as possible.

The bill was not pretty but I did what I had to do. Besides, this is my first ever puppy. I had a couple of people telling me how easy it was to give my puppy her shots by myself, but I did not want to take any risks.

This was my first puppy, a living responsibility, and I had to pay for her.

Sooooooo… Yea!

I took the necessary precautions to ensure the health and livelihood of my pet. Also this particular PetSmart store had a pet grooming salon in the back of the store next to the Banfield Pet Hospital. I made sure I stopped by to see if it was OK to bring my rottweiler puppy by sometimes to get groomed.

They offer some pretty great services such as:

  • oral care
  • nail trimming
  • hair trimming
  • shampoo
  • bath

I grabbed a business card from the front desk in the grooming salon and preceded to the front counter to purchase the pet supplies that we rounded up earlier. One awesome thing we found at the front cashier was a Puppy Start Up Kit. I could not believe that someone would make something so precious for a new dog owner like myself. It was like God guided us to that store.

The Puppy Start Up Kit featured coupons for:

  • pet food
  • beds
  • cages
  • snacks
  • toys
  • Pet Training Lessons (also inside PetSmart)
  • Banfield Pet Hospital Visits
  • Pet Grooming Salon visits

I believe the first 2 visits to the grooming salon were $10 each. That’s an amazing price to get your puppy all cleaned up and breathe smelling fresh. Not to say that I am all up in my puppy’s face or anything. I, personally don’t kiss my dog, but I know of some people who do. I just choose to show my love and affection differently.

Xena was indeed the cutest Rottweiler puppy that I had ever seen in my entire life. As a matter of fact, she was the cutest puppy ever, hands down. All she needed was a little bandana or a bow or ribbon or something cutest that people put on their puppies to win the dog competitions.

After checkout, we headed back home to introduce Xena to her new home. She was scared and nervous at first because it was all new to her. She was used to being surrounded by Rottweiler dogs and her birth parents. We fed her that night and let her explore the bedroom. Obviously, you have to be careful with puppies because they can not hold their bladders for a long time yet. After she fell asleep, we went to sleep.
